Endeavour

Thirty-five years ago on 25-Apr-1991, Rockwell International held the rollout ceremony for Endeavour, the last space shuttle built for NASA.

Endeavour was built to replace Space Shuttle Challenger after one of the solid rocket boosters failed and caused the destruction of the orbiter 73 seconds after liftoff on 28-Jan-1986. Congress approved the construction of the new space shuttle at the cost of $1.7B on 31-Jul-1987. The new space shuttle was constructed and assembled using available spare parts from the program to save time and cost. By 6-Jul-1990, final assembly was completed and for the next nine months, Endeavour was put through testing requirements before the rollout ceremony. Two weeks after the rollout, Endeavour was delivered to Kennedy Space Center on 7-May-1991. Exactly one year later, Endeavour took its first flight to orbit around the earth.

Endeavour served NASA for just about nine years with the last space flight took place on 16-May-2011. In total, Endeavour flew twenty-five flights to space for numerous missions including the assembly of the International Space Station. Endeavour was retired and is currently on display at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.
